The Matter of the Cardinal Jewel: A bit of an evening with Holmes and Watson

The Venturers Drama Group of the Visually Impaired is proud to announce its new play “The Matter of the Cardinal Jewel: A bit of an evening with Holmes and Watson”. Performances will be held from 28th to 30th October at The Cockpit Theatre, Gateforth Street, London NW8 8EH.

Doors open at 6:30 pm for a 7:30 pm start. Tickets can be purchased at the Box Office on the day for £5.00.

This is an original work based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s short story The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone. This short story was in turn adapted by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle from a stage play The Crown Diamond, unusual in that Watson hardly appeared. The short story is one of only two to be written in the third person. It is also unusual for entirely being confined to one room.

Both adapting and expanding on Conan Doyle’s original, the director of this new production, Sandy Easton has vastly expanded the narrative so that while the original mystery remains intact, the role of Watson is vastly fleshed out and the new work also functions as a serio-comic exploration of the relationship between the crime-solving duo, especially as it is set later on in Holmes’ life. Sandy is an aficionado of Conan Doyle’s work, and the play is the result of considerable research.
